The Renaissance Man and I both love of the water! We’ve been talking for a while now about how we need to go down to the river more often … and then we went to Costco. All great decisions are made at Costco right?
As we were on our “quick trip” to get some frozen chicken and a package of crackers, I spotted this green beauty out of the corner of my eye. At first I was just lusting after it thinking, “man wouldn’t I look stylish in a lime green kayak.” Then The Renaissance Man and I got to talking about the kayaks and decided it might make sense to buy them, but we need to think about it for a few days and do some research.
And after thinking about it for a few days, we headed back to Costco on a Wednesday night just before closing. As you can probably imagine kayaks come in very large boxes. Transporting these things home was certainly going to be entertaining.
We contemplated taking them out of the boxes, but Costco didn’t really want to take the boxes from us, so everything went up on the roof of the Subi.
I have never been so happy that The Renaissance Man requires tie town straps to be located in both of our vehicles. They come in handy time and time again!
I was slightly worried that the wind resistance on the boxes might cause some problems, but I’m happy to report that we made it home without any trouble at all! We took some back roads to avoid I-5 and only had to stop once so I could get out to inspect.
We purchased the kayaks on a Wednesday night, and it took all of my self control to wait until Saturday before taking them out on the Willamette. As I’ve mentioned before, we have a really nice paddle launch in Dundee behind Ash Island and it’s the perfect spot to do some early morning bird watching!
Did you know that boats need names? Just think about all the boats you’ve ever seen docked along the river or the coast…they all have names! The Renaissance Man and I had been throwing name ideas back and forth when he came up with the absolute winner…”Mrs. Mint” and “Mr. Lime”…just call us The Mojitos! ha!
I am in love with our kayaks, total happiness on the river!!! We even saw a bald eagle dive out of a tree to catch a fish, not bad for our first trip, I look forward to a summer spent on the river!

We’ve been having all sorts of fun with the kayaks! The paddle launch by our house rents them out and it’s pretty affordable. We should have you guys over for lunch and then go kayaking in the afternoon!
