Mother’s Day was a total success this year! We had my family over for brunch, and The Renaissance Man certainly out did himself with the menu. We had a fruit platter, mimosas, latkes with apple sauce and sour cream, bacon, and a ham, spinach, and gruyere cheese frittata! My mouth waters just thinking about it.
Our morning started off early so that we could make a quick batch of banana bread since we had accumulated quite the collection of smelly black bananas. We slightly tweaked a recipe from our friend Ann, and wow did the house smell amazing! The trick is to sugar coat the inside of the baking tin and sprinkle a healthy amount of sugar on top to get a nice crunchy crust.
While The Renaissance Man baked, I set the kitchen table. I thought the table turned out beautiful and I was even able to find some matching tulips to really tie everything together. Our cat Whiskey even made a guest appearance, can you find her?
Our front steps were decorated with flowers that we bought for family, along with my trusty chalk board sign. Have I mentioned that I love Goodwill? I bought an old rustic picture frame and made it into a chalk board for our wedding back in September. I keep finding such good uses for it! Making my “Happy Mother’s Day” sign was probably the easiest thing I did all day.
While we were working away in the kitchen cutting up fruit and peeling potatoes, I happened to look up and caught the hot air balloons. Perfect Mother’s Day surprise!
After brunch we spent the afternoon working in the backyard. My lovely Mom brought over some ferns and lily of the valley starts from her backyard. We’re slowly but surely starting to plant things as our backyard begins to take shape.
My Mom is one strong, smart, determined, and caring woman. I hope to be just like her some day and am glad we got to spend the day together. She is a major motivator in my life, and I can promise that these plants wouldn’t have made it into the ground without her!
